1898 Issue Overprints
known on 25pf and 50pf not placed in use

Carl Walske first reported Sperati's forged overprint in Sperati II. Two examples of each of the 25pf and 50pf genuine stamps with forged overprints were examined. All four have Sperati backstamps. The two shown below have original gum are are illustrated on plate C in Sperati II.

1. the letters of the overprints have noticeably bumpier edges than the genuine, most evident in the "M" and "r"

2. the horizontal bar of the letter "e" in "Inseln" has a black spot on the top at the center
